The Basics
Numerology began as a method of divination used by early mathematicians like Pythagoras, as astrology gave rise to astronomy. A number of different cultures and civilizations have given rise to numerology as we know it today, including the Greeks, the Egyptians, the Jewish mystical system known as the Kabbalah, and Gnostic Christians.
Under the Pythagorean system, all words can be reduced to numbers as so:
- A, J, or S = 1
- B, K, or T = 2
- C, L, or U = 3
- D, M, or V = 4
- E, N, or W = 5
- F, O, or X = 6
- G, P, or Y = 7
- H, Q, or Z = 8
- I or R = 9
Anything over 9 is reduced using digit summing, or the practice of adding up all numbers until a single digit is reached.
Meanings of Numbers
- Unity, divine presence. Microcosm. Ego, Sun.
- Polarity, balance. Choice, emotions, dilemma, Moon.
- Action, creativity, holy trinities of various mythologies. Mars.
- The world, material things. Baser instincts. Order and the stable square. Mercury.
- The senses. Jupiter
- Perfection, beauty, harmony. Imagination. Venus and Uranus.
- Stability, endurance, final things. Saturn.
- A mystic number, associated with infinity. The transient material plane. Balance, equilibrium between opposing forces. Pluto.
- Completeness of the intellectual, spiritual, and emotional. Truth. Neptune.
The Psychic Number
- The psychic number is obtained by making a single whole number of the day of your birthday. In my case, this would be 16, or 7. The psychic number is indicative of how the person sees themselves.
- The Fate Number
- This number is obtained from adding up the day, month and year of birth. This is what is predetermined for the individual by fate.
- Determining Your Name Number
- In order to determine your personal number, you simply add up all letters in your first and last names. Middle names are not usually counted.
This method is regarded as far too simplistic for most numerologists; the rough equivalent in astrology would be just basing an entire astrological chart on the sun sign. A better analysis would take the frequency of the numbers into account as well as the "final sum".
Interpreting the Name Number
Here is what the various numbers mean, when applied to the frequency that they occur in a name. If their frequency is high, it means that this quality is heightened in the person. If low, it means that the person lacks that quality.

- Awareness of talents and inner compulsions
Applications of Numerology
Personal numbers can be used to determine compatibility quickly and without doing up an entire astrological chart for purposes of a love match or any form of teamwork. The widest use for numerology is in the picking of baby names, and to determine whether or not a wife should change her name to her husband's last name.
